Humanitarian efforts for Lebonan
Stuart Huges (BBC Correspondant in Beirut) writes in his blog…
Aid agencies are trying to gather an accurate picture of the number of people displaced from their homes by the conflict in Lebanon. But assessing the true number of people likely to need humanitarian assistance is so far proving virtually impossible. Aid groups say hundreds thousands of people could have been displaced by the fighting already. But, in reality, the true figure is still unknown. The first estimates range from 100,000 to more than half a million. Aid workers are relying on the news media and contacts on the ground to try to draw up an accurate picture of how many people will need help in the days and weeks ahead. But since it’s still impossible to reach many parts of Lebanon — particularly in the south — it may be some days before the situation becomes clearer. But already, reports of large groups of displaced people gathering in schools, mosques and other centres are beginning to filter through. Food and water stocks are low and there are concerns that they could soon succumb to illness unless they’re helped soon. I spoke to a spokesman from the International committee of the Red Cross this afternoon and he said he was increasingly concerned at the infornmation he was receiving. Aid groups are preparing to mount a major humanitarian operation if it becomes necessary. They’re organising supplies of food, clothing and medical equipment which can be deployed quickly to the most needy people. The concern is that the number of those vulnerable people could be growing by the day.
The blog from above gives an impression that world is preparing for relief effort of wounded of Lebanon, but no once seems to care for those who are still alive and well in those regions, who can be saved before they get killed.

Youth Crimes at an all time low
Video games are normally blamed for increased crime and violent acts in youth of world. Games like Grand Theft Auto (GTA) are considered are the main culprit. But this graph from U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics shows that overall violence in youth has lowered. And is constantly decreasing since 1994 (When Playstation 1 was released).
So what happened is that games didn’t promote violence but they restrained street or real world aggression and transfered it to virtual worlds. The games time line was added at Game Politics, to show that no violent game increased violence on streets.
So, next time you turn the gore on in the game and see a lot of red blood pouring out after a head shot, then think its NOT blood.. its RGB 255,0,0

Bush: Variation in official statement and actual belief
President Bush’s gave an official statement yesterday saying that all international leaders at the G8 were in agreement in dealing with the Mideast crisis. CNN sources report that Bush refused to include a cease fire in the G8 statement. President Chirac of France, wanted language that criticized Israel’s overuse of force but Bush would not allow criticism of Israel in the official statement.
In contrast the video above reveals a closed door luncheon at the G8 Summit, a table microphone accidentally caught candid remarks between President Bush and Tony Blair. The American President indicated that he was frustrated with the United Nations for not doing more to mitigate the crisis, saying, “I felt like telling Kofi to get on the phone with [Syrian President] Assad and make something happen.”
So, President Bush wasn’t speaking his mind. Is he just a puppet?

Solar Death Ray
I remember reading about solar collectors in my 3rd year of engineering. They are dish type structures which concentrate the solar radiation at one point so that the energy is enough to be used for some useful purpose.

But these guys at Alternate Energy Zone took the concept a little too far, they named this collector as “Solar Death Ray” then used it for cooking Hotdogs.

Real world “Dare Devil”
If you read Marvel comics then you will surly know of Dare Devil (played by Ben Afflick in the movie of the comic book). He is a unique hero as he is blind and uses echos to visualize the area around. Pretty outrageous some may have thought, but not so much when you read abou this kid.
Ben Underwood is a blind 14-year-old who apparently uses echolocation to “see.” Ben, sightless since the age of 3, makes loud clicking noises with his tongue and then listens for the echo. According to the article, he can not only detect distance but sometimes the material of an object based on how soft, dense, or sharp the echo is.

Google Earth: North Korea Missile base
Google Earth has emerged as a very well received tool for people around the world. Many countries are still blurry due to lack of requirement. And some are purposely blurred to hide defensive structures etc. But these must be requested with Google to be omitted from their satellite images. North Korea doesn’t seem to have issued any such requests to Google, and someone while surfing over North Korea spotted their missile base and submarine fleet.
